Itinerary for 50th Anniversary Celebration in Mexico City

September 5-8, 2018

Reconnect with your fellow Mexico alumni at a casual reception at the Hotel Krystal Grand Insurgentes Sur, followed by an intimate dinner at a local restaurant.

In the morning, enjoy a walking tour of the UNAM campus. Learn about this history of the public art on campus, and the current areas of cutting-edge research.

After the UNAM tour, a small group of alumni (space is limited to 8 people) will join Gabi, the Chef at La Casa de la Universidad de California en México, for a cooking class. Gabi will teach participants how to make a traditional Mexican dish, as well as a soup and dessert. After cooking, enjoy the meal together.

In the afternoon, all are welcome to the Museo Nacional de Antropología (National Museum of Anthropology). The museum is renowned as one of the most emblematic institutions preserving Mexico’s indigenous legacy. It is a symbol of identity and a mentor for generations who seek their cultural roots. Join us for a group tour. After the museum visit you are free to enjoy dinner with friends or to explore Mexico City on your own.

Join us for a guided tour of Teotihuacán, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Commonly referred to as the City of the Gods, this pre-Columbian Mesoamerican city is known for its well-preserved murals, vast Avenue of the Dead and the impressive pyramids that mark its landscape. The day trip includes lunch at La Gruta Restaurant, which specializes in delicious dishes that mix local cuisine ingredients with pre-Hispanic culinary heritage, served in a spacious cavity of volcanic origin, surrounded by vegetation and with a mystic and unmatched atmosphere. This is an all-day trip, with transportation arranged in advance. A bus will pick us up at 8:30 am at the Hotel Krystal Grand Insurgentes Sur, and return us to the same location at 6:00 pm.

We will meet at the Museo Frida Kahlo at 10:00 am for a guided tour. Popularly known as the Casa Azul (the ‘Blue House’), the Museo Frida Kahlo preserves the personal objects that reveal the private universe of Latin America’s most celebrated woman artist. The Blue House also contains some of the painter’s most important works: Long Live Life (1954), Frida and the Caesarian Operation (1931), and Portrait of My Father Wilhelm Kahlo (1952), among others.

In the evening, join us back at La Casa de la Universidad de California en México for a Gala Reception celebrating 50 years of study abroad and exchange with our partners in Mexico.
