Remembering UCSB Professor Mattison Mines

We regret to announce the passing of Professor Emeritus Mattison Mines earlier this year. Professor Mines served as Director in our Edinburgh Study Center from 2001-2003 and again in the Netherlands from 2007-2008.   Professor Mines was a Professor in the Anthropology Department at UC Santa Barbara for over forty years. He retired in 2005 yet remained active in his research and continued to serve both the Department of Anthropology and the University advising graduate students.  Professor Mines was renowned for his work as a sociocultural anthropologist, and especially for his research in South India. Professor Mines will be remembered with affection and respect by a broad circle of students, colleagues and friends.

In Memoriam: UC Berkeley Professor Joonhong Ahn

Professor Joonhong Ahn, died in Japan in June.  Since his diagnosis of advanced liver cancer in April, 2015, and throughout his treatment regimen, he maintained a relentless pace of work in service to the profession, the department and his students.  The Department of Nuclear Engineering, in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies, plans to hold a memorial service early in the fall semester.  Prof. Ahn was the Chair of our UCIE Japan review in 2014. He was a pleasure to work with, bright, thorough and open to varied perspectives.
